Our History

1808

Samuel Cozier settled in Randolph County, IL (near Evansville).

1808

1819

Samuel Cozier came to Red Bud. Preston Brickey filed for homestead land and built a log home near the north end of present day Red Bud.

A stage coach road was surveyed and platted connecting Kaskaskia to Belleville, IL via present day Roots, Marigold, Ruma, Red Bud, and Hecker.

First school was established. The teacher was John Crozier.

William Simmons filed for homestead land which adjoined Preston Brickey’s land.

Richmond D. Durfee became the first permanent merchant of Red Bud.

Richard D. Durfee built the first house and named the town of Red Bud for the large batch of redbud trees which grew on the corner of Market and Main Streets.

The first brick building was a public school. The stone inscription read, “Red Bud Publick School, 1854” and this stone was built into the present Red Bud Elementary School.

The city became an important station on the stagecoach route between St. Louis, MO and Belleville, Kaskaskia and Chester, IL. (Line established by Edmond Faherty, with John McQuillian).

Red Bud Flouring Mills and Elevator established. Sold to Brickey Brothers in 1859.

Red Bud organized as a village on April 19, 1866.

Red Bud received its charter as a village.

The first newspaper in Red Bud was The Egyptian, by John and William Brickey and run by Peter W. Baker; Anton Helmich edited the German newspaper that was started at the same time.

Red Bud incorporated as a city under general law, populated 1730; the Mobile and Ohio Railroad ran through town.

Red Bud Public School built on West Market; high school was two-year.

City Hall building was constructed.

Red Bud built a generating plant for electricity.

First well drilled for water; water works installed in Red Bud.

Red Bud High School went to three-year study.

Red Bud High School became a four-year school; electricity was offered 24 hours a day; population was 1103.
